Future-Proofing Your Academic Leadership Career

This interactive development session is designed to help current Heads of School and Heads of Department and equivalent take a strategic approach to their long-term career development. Through guided self-reflection, peer discussion, networking, and action planning, participants will assess their professional strengths and identify areas for growth across teaching, research, leadership, external engagement, and scholarly activity.

Using future-focused exercises such as the "CV Shock Test" and "Future Biography" reflection, participants will consider how prepared they would be for career transitions beyond their current leadership role and what actions are needed to strengthen their academic profile. Facilitated discussions with CDAF members will explore opportunities to broaden influence through institutional, sector-wide, and professional leadership roles, while structured communities of practice will enable participants to build networks, share experiences, and access peer support.

The session concludes with the development of a personal career action plan, helping participants set clear priorities and intentional goals for the next 12 months and beyond.
