FMI SIG Annual Conference 2027

Thursday 14 - Friday 15 January 2027 Newcastle University Business School

The Financial Markets and Institutions SIG Annual Conference will be held on  14–15 January 2027 and hosted by the Finance Subject Group within the Newcastle University Business School. The joint conference Chairs will be Professor John Ashton and Professor Darren Duxbury.  The purpose of the Conference will be to facilitate research through supportive debate discussion, and the generation of ideas and of course, to provide an opportunity to network, catch up with old friends and make new ones.

The BAFA Financial Markets and Institutions Special Interest Group invites submissions for a two-day academic conference on the theme “Turmoil in Finance: The Need for Regulatory and Cultural Change.” Recent episodes of instability across banking, capital markets, non-bank financial institutions, crypto-assets, pension funds, and global monetary systems have renewed urgent questions about the resilience, accountability, and ethical foundations of financial markets. What is the extent of these concerns, and how should these growing issues be effectively tackled? The conference seeks to explore these and many other questions bringing together scholars, policymakers, regulators, and practitioners to examine how financial turmoil emerges, how it is transmitted across institutions and markets, and whether existing regulatory frameworks remain fit for purpose in an increasingly complex, digitised, and interconnected financial system.

We welcome theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented papers addressing topics including, but not limited to, financial crises and contagion; bank failures and systemic risk; market misconduct and financial culture; governance, incentives, and accountability in financial institutions; regulatory reform and supervisory effectiveness; fintech, crypto-assets, and digital finance; sustainable finance and greenwashing; monetary policy shocks and market fragility; investor behaviour during periods of stress; and the role of accounting, disclosure, and transparency in restoring trust. Submissions in all areas of finance and accounting are welcomed and work from early career researchers and doctoral students are particularly encouraged. The conference will provide a collegial forum for rigorous academic debate and constructive engagement on how regulatory and cultural change can contribute to more resilient, responsible, and trustworthy financial markets.

Background

Newcastle University Business School is a world-leading, triple-accredited business school, and part of Newcastle University, a research-intensive Russell Group university with a proud history of world-class academic excellence. The Finance Subject Group is dedicated to shaping the future of the field by advancing societal wellbeing and sustainability. This is achieved through cutting-edge research, impactful teaching, and collaboration with industry and academic partners.

Established in 2007, the Financial Markets and Institutions Special Interest Group brings together academics with research and scholarly interests in financial markets and institutions, broadly defined. The group is inclusive by nature and open to contributions on financial markets and institutions from a range of disciplinary perspectives. We hope this forum can provide UK based opportunities to assist new and prospective academics together with more established scholars.

Keynote Speakers

Academic Keynote Speaker: Professor Kevin Keasey (University of Leeds).

Kevin Keasey is a prolific academic leader in Accounting, Banking and Finance whose work has combined research, doctoral supervision, and academic leadership in the UK and internationally. His research has examined financial behaviour, corporate governance, banking risk, and the relationship between financial systems, regulation, and broader societal issues, including climate change. Kevin was the recipient of the Distinguished Academic Award, British Accounting and Finance Association (2025).

Policy Keynote Speaker: Andy Agathangelou, (Transparency Task Force)

Andy Agathangelou has spent four decades inside and alongside the financial services industry, and the last decade working to hold it to account. After working in multiple roles in the financial services sector, he turned his attention to what he regards as the industry's most persistent structural problem: the erosion of public trust caused by inadequately effective regulation and unchecked misconduct. In 2015 he founded the Transparency Task Force, now a Certified Social Enterprise and one of the UK's most active civil society voices on financial regulation - campaigning for a more transparent, truthful and trustworthy sector. Andy chairs the Secretariat Committee to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Investment Fraud and Fairer Financial Services, and has led the development of numerous consultation responses, white papers and reports. He also Chairs the Advisory Board for Violation Tracker UK, Leads the RSA's Economy, Finance and Business Network, is Governor of the Pensions Policy Institute, and Member of Better Finance, the pan-European pro-consumer advocacy group.

Policy Keynote Speaker: Maia Kirby&, Violation Tracker UK Project Coordinator, Good Jobs First

Maia works with Violation Tracker UK, the first wide-ranging database of enforcement actions brought against companies by government regulators in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It contains more than 130,000 cases involving issues such as financial misconduct, workplace abuses, environmental offences and anti-competitive practices. Maia also writes and speaks publicly about issues relating to financial and corporate misconduct.

Regulatory and Cultural Change Roundtable.

We will hold a roundtable discussion examining concerns within the financial system, their causes and potential solutions. This panel discussion will discuss and develop a wider dialogue as to many questions important for Financial Regulation and Financial Markets. Details to follow.
