The IPSIG is holding its 4th Annual IPSIG Doctoral Colloquium 2026 on 25 June 2026 at the Birmingham City Business School, Birmingham City University.

Jointly hosted by the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Interdisciplinary Perspectives Special Interest Group (IPSIG), the Department of Accountancy, Finance and Economics and the Centre for Responsible Innovation in Big Data and AI (BRAIN), Birmingham City Business School.

Overview

BAFA IPSIG is pleased to announce the 4th Annual BAFA IPSIG Doctoral Colloquium, to be held on Thursday, 25 June 2026 at Birmingham City Business School, Birmingham City University.

The colloquium brings together postgraduate researchers and early career researchers (ECRs) with an interest in interdisciplinary and critical perspectives on accounting and finance. It provides a friendly, supportive, and intellectually stimulating environment in which participants can present and discuss their research, receive constructive feedback, and engage with a network of scholars.

The event will be delivered in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and online participation. While both modes are welcomed, in-person attendance is strongly encouraged to enhance opportunities for engagement, networking, and informal discussion. Presenting participants will receive detailed feedback from a panel of experienced academics to support the development and refinement of their research. Mentoring opportunities from BAFA IPSIG members will also be discussed during the day.

Call for Extended Abstracts

We invite submissions in the form of extended abstracts (500–1,000 words) relating to:

  • completed papers
  • working papers
  • emerging research ideas at any stage of your PhD

Submissions should engage with interdisciplinary perspectives on accounting and finance. We particularly welcome research that adopts critical and interpretive approaches. Indicative topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Accounting, accountability, and governance
  • Sustainability, ESG, and non-financial reporting
  • Auditing, assurance, ethics, public policy and organisational culture
  • Accounting for the public interest, plurality of publics and diversity
  • The accounting profession, contested expertise, accounting scandals
  • Management accounting, innovation, and organisational change
  • Performance measurement and management control
  • Accounting education and pedagogical innovation
  • Accounting and finance in emerging and developing economies
  • Accounting, finance and digital transformation (e.g., AI, big data, blockchain)
  • Interdisciplinary and critical perspectives on accounting and finance
  • Emerging areas, theoretical and methodological developments in accounting and finance
  • Impact of machine learning, large language models on accounting and finance research
  • The role and implications of accounting within social justice, equality, racial and/or social conflict, industrial relations, counter-accounting
  • Green finance
  • Financial markets, institutions, and regulation
  • Financial legislation and regulatory frameworks
  • Corporate finance and financial reporting
  • Investor behaviour and decision-making
  • Risk management and financial resilience
  • Social studies of finance and valuation
  • Behavioural finance and understanding psychological biases influencing financial decision-making
  • Financial sociology: social and cultural factors shaping financial markets and institutions

Keynote Sessions

The colloquium will include two keynote sessions designed to support doctoral researchers and ECRs. These will provide insights into areas such as publishing, theorising, and navigating academic research careers.

Submission Guidelines and Timeline

Please submit an extended abstract of 500–1,000 words by:

  • Notification of outcome: 20 May 2026

Your abstract should include:

  • the purpose, motivation, and research aim/s
  • an outline of the theoretical framework
  • a brief description of the methodology
  • where appropriate, key findings and expected contributions

This is a hybrid event.

  • In-person participation: Birmingham City University, City Centre Campus
  • Online participation: Access details will be shared with accepted participants closer to the event

  • PhD students: £90
  • Early career researchers / faculty members: £110
